Garcia Marquez was hospitalized on Monday due to dehydration and a lung and urinary tract infection. Garcia Marquez's personal secretary Monica Alonso briefly talked to media outside of the hospital about his condition. "It's nothing serious, it wasn't an emergency. In a few days, we will leave (the hospital)," Alonso said. The 87-year-old author was admitted into the hospital on Monday, though it wasn't made public until Thursday. Dozens of reporters have gathered all day long outside Mexico City's 'Salvador Zubiran' hospital waiting for updates on the author's condition who by many accounts is the most popular Spanish-language writer since Miguel de Cervantes in the 17th century. Garcia Marquez has lived in Mexico City for more than three decades and has limited his public appearances in recent years. He was feted by friends and well-wishers on his 87th birthday last month, who gave him cake and flowers in front of assembled media outside his home in an exclusive neighborhood in the south of Mexico City. He did not speak at the event, though he sang along "Las Mananitas", the Mexican version of "Happy Birthday". "One hundred years of solitude", his most famous novel, has sold some 50 (m) million copies in more than 25 languages and its 1967 publication was a milestone in a two-decade-long Latin American literature boom. Garcia Marquez won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1982, and his novels have outsold everything published in Spanish except the Bible.
