| Video Discription | (18 Mar 1998) Spanish/Nat Guatemala's Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú was granted Mexican citizenship at a special ceremony in her honour on Tuesday. Her account of human rights abuse endured by thousands of fellow Indians across Central America became a bestseller in the autobiographical book 'I, Rigoberta Menchú'. The ceremony on Wednesday was in recognition of the impact of that work. She was presented with the documents for her Mexican citizenship by interior secretary, Francisco Labastida Ochoa. Rigoberta is currently seeking to resolve a stand off between President Ernesto Zedillo and the Zapatista rebels fighting for Indian rights in the southern state of Chiapas. The Guatemalan human rights activist Rigoberta Menchu received a warm welcome in Mexico City on Tuesday at a ceremony held in her honour. She arrived accompanied by Mexico's Interior Secretary Labastida Ochoa, Interior Secretary, who later presented her with a residents visa in a country that has become her second home. Rigoberta, a former Nobel Peace Prize winner, was born the daughter of poor rural Indian labourers. The plight of her family and thousands like it was highlighted in her best selling autobiography 'I, Rigoberta Menchu'. Labastida used the occasion to promote Mexico's image on matters of immigration. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The government's politics on migration are know for their character, including the protection of human rights irrespective of a person's origin or migratory situation." SUPER CAPTION: Alejandro Carrillo Castro, National Institute for Immigration Rigoberta also complimented Mexico. She said many Guatemalans who fled a civil war spanning more than three decades were grateful to have found shelter in Mexico. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Only to say what we Guatemalans feel, with great gratitude, towards this country. When our people returned they also took a piece of Mexico with them. They have it with them there now because these children who left at the age of three or four and returned to their country after 15 or 16 years, and who are now adolescents, now have a great experience of the Mexican people." SUPER CAPTION: Rigoberta Menchu, Nobel Peace Prize winner But she continues to champion the cause of human rights. She learnt Spanish in order to speak up for the poor and reach a wider audience. On Tuesday, she reminded Mexico that non-Mexicans living there had something to contribute. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The repatriation of Guatemalans is considered one of the most successful. Mexico has been a shelter for Guatemalan refugees. We believe that it is necessary to boost this valuable work so that Mexico continues as always, that is to say, it continues to show that those not from Mexico who live there have much to learn but also have much to bring to this country." SUPER CAPTION: Rigoberta Menchu, Nobel Peace prizewinner Rigoberta is one of several seeking a resumption of peace talks between the government and Indians in the conflict torn southern state of Chiapas. Indian communities there have suffered violence and massacre at the hands of both police and paramilitary organisations linked to the ruling party. The former Nobel Peace Prize winner told reporters charities and non government organisations had a major part to play in the search for peace.
