| Video Discription | It is a drink which most tourists are unaware about as they are deluged by its more popular cousin, feni. Urak is distilled from the summer months of March to May. Goans drink urak right through the summer months and stop drinking it at the first shower of rain in June. Its shelf life is extremely short. Like a blooming summer flower, it vanishes with the rains. You never see her till summer cometh again next year. Some of its fans however, keep urak in glass bottles and refrigerate it. A pretty great idea and does give pretty much the same flavor and passionate response. The local legend has it that drinking urak during the summer months will keep your nasty colds and fevers away for the rest of the year. Urak, is brewed from ripe cashew apple. It is the first distillation of the cashew apple. For the uninitiated, the second distillation is feni. Unlike feni, urak does not give a stinging whiff. It emanates a fruity, mildly pungent aroma of the cashew apple. Its consistency is of a cloudy fruity beverage. For those looking for factory made clear fluids, this is not their drink. They will unfortunately, in this lifetime, miss what Goan soil and its romantic weather has so delightfully created for the world. |
