| Video Discription | Chordee is a congenital curvature of the penis that occurs when the suspensory ligament that runs along the top of the penis is too short or fibrotic. This causes the penis to bend downward during erections. Corrective surgery is usually done on infants and children. The goals are to straighten the penis and allow normal erections and urination as the child gets older. The most common surgery is called chordee release or chordee correction. The surgeon will detach the suspensory ligament from the glans penis to release the tissue, pulling the penis downward. This allows the penis to straighten. Sometimes other procedures are also needed, like removing scar tissue or grafting skin or tissue to lengthen the shorter side of the penis. Severe cases may require multiple staged procedures over time. After surgery, the penis is wrapped in dressings, and the child usually stays in the hospital for 1-2 days for monitoring and pain management. Potential risks of surgery include bleeding, infection, injury to the urethra, loss of skin sensitivity, and recurrent chordee. Parents are counseled about these risks beforehand. Following surgery, routine wound care and hygiene are important while healing. Periodic exams by the surgeon are done to monitor results over time. Additional procedures may be needed in some cases to optimize outcomes. With successful correction, most infants and children are able to urinate normally, have straight erections in adulthood, and have satisfactory sexual function. Close follow-up care is key. |
