| Video Discription | (22 Feb 2022) Villages on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border did not show much sign of alarm following the Belarusian government's announcement that Russian troops would extend their presence in the country "indefinitely". On Monday, Belarus' defense minister said that joint exercises with Russian troops would continue, amid rising tensions in eastern Ukraine. But on Tuesday, at the the Ukraine-Belarus border crossing at Novi Yarylovychi, Northern Ukraine, a border guard told The Associated Press that everything was operating as normal and that they had not experienced any changes following the announcement. Meanwhile, in other small villages at the border, local residents expressed their disbelief that a conflict between Russians and Ukrainians was even possible. Walking through his village of Skytok, local resident Rostyslav Klymenko, said: "All of us (Russians, Belorussians, Ukrainians) are Slavic people, and we have nothing to argue about. To all those trying to put us head-to-head, try to make us collide… As I said before, we have nothing to argue about." Riding her bike down the village street, one woman, Antonina, stopped to say she didn't believe there would be conflict. "Surely brother will not go against brother? No of course not. We don't believe it in any case," she said. Svitlana Bytsko, the mayor of Dobrianka, told the AP that if Ukraine had maintained their nuclear power from the Soviet Union, the country would not be facing the current crisis. "As for our neighbors, they have become our enemies" Bytsko added, "In my opinion, they have only Tsarist ambitions. They don't want to build respect between countries. They want to push us to submit to the Tsar."
