Ukraine is strengthening security on its border with Belarus with an additional 8,500 service members being deployed to protect the crossing, according to officials. Border police have been carrying out exercises to prepare for possible clashes with migrants on the Belarusian border. Thousands of asylum-seekers have slipped into EU member nations Poland, Lithuania and Latvia since the summer from Belarus, though many others have also been kept from entering or pushed back. The crisis involving a large number of migrants stuck at the EU’s border threatens to become a humanitarian crisis as winter approaches. It is also creating another point of tension between the West and Belarus’ authoritarian regime.
