Neither the heliocentric nor the geocentric cosmology produces an accurate representation of planetary motions because the planets are in elliptical, not circular, orbits and so display non-uniform motion on the plane of the sky. It was Tycho Brahe's careful observations accumulated over several decades that were able to prove the non-uniform motions. Brahe's observations had an accuracy of about one or two arcminutes, three or four times better than any previous observations. With Brahe's observations, there could be no doubt that the planets showed non-uniform motion. Given that, the heliocentric model is a more elegant arrangement for the solar system because the planets all move in the same direction around the sun with the nearer planets moving faster and the more distant planets moving slower. |
