| Video Discription | Iodoform test is used to check the presence of carbonyl compounds with the structure R-CO-CH3 or alcohols with the structure R-CH(OH)-CH3 in a given unknown substance. The reaction of iodine, a base and a methyl ketone gives a yellow precipitate along with an “antiseptic” smell. A positive result - the pale yellow precipitate of triiodomethane (iodoform) - is given by an aldehyde or ketone containing the grouping: ... If "R"is a hydrocarbon group, then you have a ketone. Lots of ketones give this reaction, but those that do all have a methyl group on one side of the carbon-oxygen double bond. Ethanol is the only primary alcohol to give the triiodomethane (iodoform) reaction. If "R" is a hydrocarbon group, then you have a secondary alcohol.
