Fears are growing for the lives of four Western hostages in Kashmir following a claim by a captured guerilla that they are dead and may be buried in the pine forests of the troubled Indian province.
More than 500 policemen launched a large search Tuesday into the mountains of Kashmir to investigate the claim.
The hostages - an American, two Britons and one German - have been held for 11 months by Muslim militants who have been fighting since 1989 for a Kashmir independent of India.
The mountain pine forest near Magam is where the hostages are allegedly buried.
Sniffer dogs were on the trail Tuesday, helping investigate a claim that four Western hostages held in Kashmir are already dead.
The claim came from captured guerilla Nazir Mohammad who reportedly told police they were dead.
Mohammad was a former member of the Al-Faran group that abducted the tourists, but said that he had left the group by the time they were killed, allegedly in mid December.
SOUNDBITE:
Well I'd say it's rather significant because this is the first time that there is a question mark over whether they are actually dead. The whole story started with the interrogation of a militant who was arrested about three weeks ago in Sri Lanka and he said that he believes that they are dead. According to him they were killed on December 13th.

There have not been any sightings of the hostages for about five or six months now, which further adds to the belief that they are dead.
SOUNDBITE:
What is a cause for worry is that in the last five to six months no intelligence agency has had a firsthand report of their safety. They believe that they may be alive but this information is secondhand and not based on actual sitings.

But other police sources claim the hostages were seen in late December, which casts doubt on Mohammad's comments.
In a statement just released by the U-S State Department says until there is proof the hostages are dead - they work on the assumption that they are alive.
SOUNDBITE:
"These aren't eye witness reports. I maintain that as long as there's no definitive proof that the hostages are dead we are going to continue to operate on the assumption that they are alive. We 'll continue to work closely with Indian authorities and other government organisations to secure their release."

A large search operation is now underway.
Five Western security experts were part of the team, but the Indian police officer leading the search refused to disclose their identities.
Indian police are checking whether the hostages have been killed and buried in a mountain pine forest near Magam, 70 kilometers (45 miles) south of Srinagar.
The area is famous for its natural springs and was a major tourist centre before the Kashmiri insurrection turned violent in 1989.
Reporters were barred entry to Magam and told it would be dangerous for them.
The search was launched at the request of the U.S., British and German governments.
One hostage, Norwegian Hans Christian Ostro, was beheaded last August.
Still missing are American Donald Hutchings, Britons Keith Mangan and Paul Wells and Dirk Hasert of Germany.
