These ideas are based on a model of group development put forth by Bruce Tuckman in his 1965 article, "Developmental Sequence in Small Groups." FORMING When you're forming a team, people begin to ask questions of themselves like, "What's my role? Where do I fit? Can I trust this team?" As a leader, it's important to encourage the team to build trust and to be comfortable. 2. STORMING Eventually, somebody's going to test the system. Some kind of conflict will come up. Something's not going to work the way it's supposed to. In this stage, it's important to have a Conflict Resolution Process to follow. 3. NORMING Depending on how you deal with the storming stage, you will either establish good or bad norms. We've all seen the bad norms: gossip, backbiting, mistrust, etc. But if you've handled the storming stage well, your team will begin to dream and think higher thoughts of the team. 4. PERFORMING Finally, if good norms are established, your team will start asking questions like, "What can we really accomplish? What's it going to take to accomplish the vision set forth?"
