| Video Discription | Watch the simulated launch of a nuclear shell from "Atomic Annie", an American atomic gun, during Exercise Keystone, a multinational military exercise organised by NATO in September 1954. “Atomic Annie” was the US Army’s largest artillery weapon at the time. It weighed 85 tons, but was fully mobile and manned like any other piece of artillery. During Exercise Keystone held in Greece and Turkey between 1-5 September 1954, “Atomic Annie” became the first atomic cannon to be fired in Europe and simulate a nuclear explosion. The simulation was carried out during a period when the West had decided to shift the emphasis of its defence policy to greater dependency on the use of nuclear weapons.
