One of the most popular groups in music history, Three Dog Night take the stage with the Tennessee Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Larry Baird), performing sixteen of their chart-topping hits. Featuring the songs that helped define the Sixties and Seventies, Three Dog Night has never been better than in this concert recorded live at The Renaissance Center in Dickson, Tennessee.
DVD Review: Calling this concert by Three Dog Night and the Tennessee Symphony "a new moment in history," as the announcer does, is an absurd bit of hype. But it doesn't mean fans of the group won't enjoy the 80-minute show, recorded in 2000 at Tennessee's Renaissance Center (also on CD). Singers Danny Hutton and Cory Wells's voices are still strong if a bit shrill (third Dog and ex-drug addict Chuck Negron isn't mentioned, let alone seen or heard); their backing band features several original members; and the orchestra adds some interesting arrangements and considerable color. Most of all, these guys had a lot of hits, and they're all here, from "Mama Told Me Not to Come" to "One," from "Eli's Coming" to "Easy to Be Hard" and the inevitable "Joy to the World." Creative direction and interviews with the principals help turn this into a pleasant walk down memory lane, at the very least. --Sam Graham
Best Classic Bands update: Floyd Sneed, the drummer behind Three Dog Night’s remarkable run of singles in the late ’60s and ’70s, including such classic rock favorites as “Joy to the World” and “An Old Fashioned Love Song,” has died at the age of 80. News of his passing, on Jan. 27, 2023, was posted on the group’s Facebook page on Jan. 29, 2023, noting, “Floyd broke many barriers both musically and culturally.” No cause of death was given.
In the band’s post, Three Dog Night described Floyd Sneed as “an absolutely wonderful human being, a complete original and a sweetheart of a man. He was also an extraordinarily unique drummer who brought so much to Three Dog Night’s sound. Floyd broke many barriers both musically and culturally; he also influenced countless other drummers with his amazing technique. He will be greatly missed by all of us in the band and the many musicians, artists, and others he inspired throughout his life.” |
