Cover - "Sagara Pran Talmalala"
Our childhood stories were not about Raja Rani, Cinderella or Red Riding Hood. Our parents told us stories of the brave freedom fighters and how they sacrificed their lives so the country would be free from British-Raj slavery and breathe in Swatantra Bharat. One of the stories would also be about Veer Savarkar jumping from the ship in the ocean, his long long kalapani punishment. His poetry "Sagara Pran Talmalala" was composed by Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar, and was sung by The Mangeshkars. The song was telecasted on TV regularly. The poetry, the composition and the rendition had a deep effect on us, and still continues to inspire us.
This is a tribute to Veer Savarkar's valour from the Naithanis.
10th December 1909, Brighton - England
Freedom Fighter Veer Savarkar got news about his 4 year old son's death and his brother's arrest. Heartbroken, tormented and restless of not being able to reach his dear ones in this hour, his priority still remained fighting for his nation's freedom. Standing firmly on the raging seashore front, freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar impatiently called out to the sea expressing longing for his motherland:
Veer Savarkar served 27 years of imprisonment in his life time including 10 years of kalapani. He dedicated his life to achieve his dream of undivided and unified Maa Bharati. It will be an insult forgetting such brave freedom fighter, and all those brave hearted souls who sacrificed their life fighting for the freedom of Maa Bharti. It's the sacrifice of Veer Savarkar and likewise countless freedom fighters, because of whom we are living and breathing in an independent country. Remembering the greatest son of Maa Bharti is our duty. We bow down to him with our heartfelt gratitude.

Take me back to my motherland. O Ocean, my soul is tormented /restless
have always seen you washing my mother’s feet.
You told me – let us go to a different lands and see the wonders, the diversity of nature.
My mother was apprehensive about my separation from her, but you promised her
(you promised her) that just like you were taking me away, you would soon bring me back (sailing on your back)
trusted your words
that I would return to my land with knowledge and experience gained
and use it for strengthening my mother, my country.
So I left her saying I’ll return soon.
O Ocean, my soul is tormented /restless
In the form of the foam/surf you laugh at me ruthlessly,
Why did you break your promise this way? (promise of taking me back to my mother)
The dominance/strength that you boast of or claim to have,
Are you scared of the British land/ British rule.
You fool yourself and her by calling my mother weak.
Why put me and her through this pain?
You are infact the one who is scared of the British land/ British rule.
My Mother is not weak, helpless nor a coward,
Let me tell you (remind you), Agasthi (one of her sons)
in an instant had swallowed you.
O Ocean, my soul is tormented /restless
