ECP is an outpatient procedure where external compression devices are made which will be wrapped around your calf muscles, thighs and the gluteal region that is you buttocks. The main procedure is carried out in an OPD basis. When he comes to the OPD, the patient is made to lay down flat, 3 leads are kept to monitor his ECG and these cuffs, they are like the BP cuffs, they are wrapped around the thighs and the gluteal region. What this does is, this compresses, when the heart is in a relaxed stage, when there is not much blood supply to the heart. In that stage, the machine will compress, which will allow all the blood to be pushed into the heart and when the heart is pumping, the cuff is relaxed so that all the blood comes to the body, that is, it will increase the systemic vascular resistance when the heart is relaxed and it will decreased systemic vascular resistance when the heart is contracting. So allowing a good cardiac output so that the patient is relived. This is happening when the patient is having unstable angina, where he is continuously having chest pain, and where the drugs are not acting on it patient’s condition is not fit for surgery or stenting, this kind of a procedure can be followed. |
