Why are almost all of the other parts of the body hidden, but the nape of the neck showing? Actually it is believed that before the Edo period, the last era the samurai existed, no one showed the back of their neck when wearing kimono. This culture became popular thanks to the 250 years of peace during the Edo period, which helped the development of various fashions in kimono and hairstyles. Women began to try different hairstyles for fashion, and oil was used as hair gel. If this oil gets on the kimono it will damage the fabric, so this is why women started to pull back the kimono behind their neck and show their napes.
