And now it’s time for another Wellness 101…How to Stop Negative Thinking…presented by St. Luke’s University Health Network.
Hey guys, Mr. Wellness here and today were going to talk about some effective ways you can combat your negative thinking.
It can be challenging to block out all that life throws at you. We all have negative thoughts that can affect our moods daily! These “Cognitive Distortions” can make something out to be worse in your head, than it is in reality. But just because we all get them…doesn’t mean you should take them lightly. Research has shown that having repeated negative thoughts can have a detrimental affect over your mental and physical well-being. What’s more, negative thinking can have damaging impacts to your relationships at home, and at work!
STEP ONE: Say It Outloud
When you catch yourself thinking negatively, force yourself to say something positive, out loud, to balancing things out. According to a study at Harvard, if someone says something out loud, it is 10 times more powerful than when they think it. Negative thoughts like fear and jealousy come natural to us. But positive thoughts take effort and focus and will help push out the negative. Give it a try…self-love may feel awkward at first…but it’s truly powerful stuff.
STEP TWO: Prove Yourself Wrong
The age-old adage “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t…you’re right!” is 100% true. So when you start thinking negatively, take action to prove yourself wrong. For example, if you beat yourself up about being out of shape…then get up and do something about it: like walking 3 times a week for 20 minutes. Then gradually increase your exercise over time. Tired of saying you’re not smart because you don’t know how the stock market works? Learn! There are plenty of resources at your fingertips like google and YouTube that can help you learn more about a subject you don’t understand. The point is…be your own advocate and become who you wish you were.
STEP THREE: Just the Facts
Remember, while our thoughts and feelings are valid, they are not always fact. Ask yourself…what is the evidence for and against this way of thinking? Try to remove all emotion out of the equation and you will arrive at a much more clear, rational, and different perspective.
STEP FOUR: Distract Yourself
When all else fails, and that little negativity demon won’t leave you alone…try distracting yourself to shut it down. Distractions like reading, playing a game, or exercise can help you forget all that negative juju and help you move forward to a positive place…even if it’s only for a short while.
We all suffer from negative thoughts my friends. Whether it’s your family, your job, your social life, or something entirely different, that negativity can take its toll on you. Remember…it’s not necessarily what you think, but HOW you think that makes all the difference.
