In this part I would like to address most common problems Q+ owners might experience.
I certainly did.
The serial number of the Waldorf Q+ I owned was: 2 310 150 000 569.
-
From my understanding, a significant number of Q+ units (both the original and Phoenix reissue) had a troublesome analog filter module. From day one.
The OS update had never completely solved the problem.
In the late 2000s Waldorf offered a clock modification kit, free of charge.
I own one but never installed it, still looking for someone who did.
Personally, I doubt its efficiency.
Anyway, it's a job for a pro. Some people even had their Q+ synths repaired at Waldorf but the problem remained.
In general, dealing with the company takes 'awhile'. Sometimes their kind of help only adds to the perplexity.
Opening the unit and messing with filter cards is not a good idea unless you really know what to do.
Keep in mind that Waldorf Music is not a legal successor to former Waldorf Electronics.

Let's look into this matter.
Analog Filter Module has 4 filter cards supporting 4 voices each.
On my Q+ analog voices 9-16 (filter card slots 3&4) always work properly. However, filters 1-8 (slots 1&2) function intermittently, they may start / stop processing in seconds or minutes.
The analog voices are supposed to work in steps here: 1 then 9, 2-10, 3-11 .. 8-16. When cards 1 & 2 are out of business, we get this 'alternate note not sounding' issue, every first, third, fifth and the other odd notes are missing.

I've checked all 4 AF boards of my Q Plus in different slots, all of them work properly, the problem is elsewhere.
Usually, performing AFM test helps for some reason but the problem reoccurs after a while.
After years of owning the unit and lots of time and energy wasted on researching the problem, I discovered that regular extensive tweaking somewhat helps.
This is not an ultimate solution but things are more interesting now.
Alternatively, you can run analog filters in Dual Unison mode or have them mixed with digital filters.
That can produce some interesting results too.

The Re-Organizing Memory issue is much more prosaic but requires attention.
If you edit your patches a lot, Q+ re-organizes its memory once in a while. The problem with Q+ OS is that it 'initializes' (erases) last 50-60 presets in the process. So, back them up.
Save your patches as you edit via MIDI dump, it is also the best way to organize them. Keep in mind that Q-cards are a bit slower (and glitchier) to use.
To avoid havoc, you can even manually re-organize the memory and then load previously saved patches before doing an important gig or recording.
Refer to the manual and clean the memory before loading new sound banks.

Ironically, holding that Multi button during power-up does not effect my Q+'s memory at all. I wonder whether that's unique to the unit I own or a common thing.
-
Once in a while you may notice surprising modulations altering your settings, notably panorama.
To avoid that, create a neutral multi with 'init' programs where pretty much everything is either disabled or set to zero / default.
Enter and quit Multi Mode through that 'unbiased' template, so that new sounds do not 'inherit' features of the previous ones.
-
On a random occasion, when I extensively use the Modulation Wheel, it starts to affect pitch.
That can be weird and annoying but gets back to normal after I move the Pitch Wheel full upwards and then downwards or the other way around.
-
With time, the encoders may start acting randomly if you are not using them much. Generally, twisting them back and forth helps.
You can replace them too, they are quite inexpensive but usually it is not necessary, just protect the synth from dust.
-
Finally, Q+ OS may freeze if you overload it with intricacies.
Occasionally, it also happens when inserting a Q-card. It's better to put a card in before booting up.
Unplug the synth as Q+ doesn't have a power switch. Plug in, it should boot and work normally.
-
That probably sums up my experience.
Frankly, such peculiarities don't bother me much when I am actually using this instrument. Writing down its flaws is far more frustrating.
Despite those shortcomings, Waldorf Q+ is a very capable digital synthesizer. Plastic, innovative and creative. Luxurious too.
Just don't expect it to cover all your needs. It's an experimental machine.
