| Video Discription | http://www.teachastronomy.com/ Why is Venus by far the hottest planet in the solar system? A simple calculation shows that Venus should not be that much hotter than the Earth. Venus is three quarters of an astronomical unit away from the Sun, three quarters of the distance from the Earth to the Sun. The inverse square law says that the Sun's radiation at the surface of Venus should be just under twice the level of the Sun's radiation of the surface of the Earth. Application of the Stephen-Boltzmann law says what the surface temperature of Venus should be. It works out to be around 20 percent higher then the temperature at the surface of the Earth measured in Kelvin. This corresponds to about 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Yet the temperature on the surface of Venus is nearly 900 degrees, a huge difference. The cause of this is the runaway greenhouse effect that took place on Venus over a period of hundreds of millions of years. As carbon dioxide increased in its concentration in Venus' atmosphere, it trapped more and more solar radiation. The Sun's radiation reaches the surface of Venus and is degraded to infrared waves that are absorbed by carbon dioxide, heating up the atmosphere until it reached its present huge temperature. This is what makes Venus such an inhospitable place and what gives a warning sign to the possibility of the greenhouse effect on Earth. |
