These programs work with different public and private community-based organizations and financial institutions to provide financial backing and technical assistance to stimulate business creation and growth.
These programs help to provide capital, equipment, space, job training, and entrepreneurial skills that can help to start and/or grow a business. Business Programs also support the creation and preservation of quality jobs in rural areas.
There are a lot of these opportunities and the USDA announced a couple of weeks ago that they are giving away $74 million worth of federal grants to rural businesses.
It will also help 143 healthcare organizations and critical services for 3 million people across 37 states along with Guam and Peurto Rico.
For example, there’s the Agriculture Innovation Center program.
The goal of the BioPreferred Program is to increase the purchase and use of biobased products to spur economic development, create new jobs and provide new markets for farm commodities.
The two major parts of the Program are: mandatory purchasing requirements for federal agencies and their contractors; and, a voluntary labeling initiative for biobased.
The USDA offers energy programs for rural businesses as well. These federal grant programs offer funding to complete energy audits, provide renewable energy development assistance, make energy efficiency improvements and install renewable energy systems.
With this one, theres’ the Advnaced Biofuel Payment program; the Biorefinery, Renewable Chemical, and Biobased Product Manufacturing Assistance Program;
the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program; Rural Energy Pilot Program; Rural Energy for America Program Energy Audits & Renewable Energy Development Grants; and the Rural Energy for America Program Renewable Energy Systems & Energy Efficiency Improvement Loans & Grants.
The USDA also offers the Food Supply Chain Guaranteed Loan Program, which is a part of USDA’s Build Back Better initiative to strengthen critical supply chains and our food system.
This program guarantees loans of up to $40 million for qualified lenders to finance food systems projects.
The program will support new investments in infrastructure for food aggregation, processing, manufacturing, storage, transportation, wholesaling, and distribution to increase capacity and create a more resilient, diverse, and secure U.S. food supply chain. This program is fully funded by the American Rescue Plan Act.
Next up, the purpose of the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program is to increase significantly the sales and use of higher blends of ethanol and biodiesel by expanding the infrastructure for renewable fuels derived from U.S. agricultural products.
Then, there’s the Intermediary Relending Program (IRP). This program provides 1 percent low-interest loans to local lenders or “intermediaries” that re-lend to businesses to improve economic conditions and create jobs in rural communities.
Next, we have the Meat and Poultry Intermediary Lending Program, which provides grant funding to intermediary lenders who finance – or plan to finance – the start-up, expansion, or operation of slaughter, or other processing of meat and poultry.
Similarly, there’s the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (or MPPEP). This provides grants to help eligible processors expand their capacity. USDA Rural Development designed the MPPEP to encourage competition.
Rural Business Development Grants (or RBDG), which is designed to provide technical assistance and training for small rural businesses. Small means that the business has fewer than 50 new workers and less than $1 million in gross revenue.
