Welcome back to UK Cigar Reviews!
Today’s episode is extra special as I revisit one of my absolute favorite Cuban cigars - Bolivar. This week it's the Bolivar Royal Corona. We started this channel with a Bolivar, and here we are again, savouring another beautiful creation from this brand.
What’s in the Episode:
• First Impressions: Oh, the aroma! As soon as I picked up this dry cigar, I could smell the quality. It’s got that classic Cuban richness that just calls to you. You know you’re in for something special!
• History Vibes: A little trip down memory lane as I think back to when Cuban cigars were all the rage but impossible to get your hands on. I even wondered what these beauties would have cost back in the 60s!
I did some research, this is fascinating...
In the 1960s, the average price of a Cuban cigar was much lower than it is today, but it still varied depending on the brand and the country of sale. In the UK, for example, a high-quality Cuban cigar like a Montecristo or a Partagas could cost around 5 to 10 shillings (equivalent to approximately 25 to 50 pence after decimalization in 1971). To put that in context, a cigar that cost around 7 shillings (35 pence) in the 1960s would be equivalent to around £6-7 today when adjusted for inflation.
• Lighting Up: The careful art of lighting a cigar—indoors, you can really take your time. Outdoors, though, a jet lighter might be necessary. Either way, this one lit beautifully.
Flavour Explosion:
• First Third: A powerful hit of leather and cedar, with hints of dark chocolate, coffee, orange peel, and hazelnut peeking through.
• Second Third: Things shift—more coffee and orange peel, with the leather mellowing out. I found the flavors deepening in a very satisfying way.
• Final Third: The earthiness fades, but the citrus and coffee stick around for a smooth finish. Just lovely.
• Construction & Size: 4 7/8 inch x 50 ring gauge cigar with perfect construction—smooth, oily, and no nasty lumps. It’s a joy to hold and smoke, and I’m a fan of the detailed band with Simon Bolivar on it. The cigar looks as good as it tastes!
• Cubans vs. Non-Cubans: After trying a lot of non-Cuban cigars recently, coming back to a Cuban feels like slipping into your favorite slippers. There’s just something so familiar and comforting about it.
The All-Important Score:
• Aroma: 9.5/10 – Mouthwatering from the first sniff.
• Strength: 9.5/10 – Medium with beautifully layered flavors.
• Smoke: 10/10 – Rich and thick, just as it should be.
• Draw: 9/10 – Effortless, no blockages at all.
• Burn: 10/10 – Perfectly even, no touch-ups needed.
Total Score: 9.6/10!
This is officially the highest-scoring cigar I’ve reviewed to date! I mean, wow—what a smoke. If I had the cash, I’d be buying boxes of these in a heartbeat.
Final Thoughts:
This Bolivar Royal Corona was a real treat. It’s not just the most expensive Cuban I’ve smoked, but honestly, it might be one of the best. If you get the chance to try one, do it—you’ll thank me later!
