We still love watching characters going through depressing ordeals before reaching a sad ending. The movie tragedy is as strong as tragedy has always been. With that in mind I have split the tragical genre into 10 distinct subgenres that show all the different forms a tragic story might take. And to honor tragedy’s ancient tradition each category is dedicated to a specific Greek legend. Each entry narrates an ancient myth, then explains its narrative structure. After the subgenre is specified, we proceed to cite examples of films (sometimes books and operas) that fit the bill.
