CM Punk and his triceps talked greasy about AEW to kick off WrestleMania week. 2024 has been defined by kicking AEW while its down, and few people are more qualified to put the boots to AEW and pro wrestling’s player coach Tony Khan, than CM Punk.
Punk’s two-hour chat with Ariel Helwani ran the gamut of Punk’s time in AEW, but most notably Punk’s fight against Jack Perry during the Brawl in that ultimately claimed Punk’s AEW career. Today, we’re going to talk about Punk’s shoot interview on AEW, how he made Jungle Boy Jack Perry disappear and how Phil Brooks continues to haunt AEW long after he’s gone.
You know what to do in Swahili.
If anybody deserved for WWE’s furious comeback in 2023, it was Jungle Boy Jack Perry. Man’s should have won best backstage fight in ways that benefit WWE, best hill to die on in ways that benefit WWE. It’s not fair to blame Jack Perry for CM Punk’s AEW exit, but at the same time it’s unrealistic to not blame Jungle Boy. For all intents and purposes, CM Punk leaving AEW was the company’s Bash at the Beach 2000 moment. When its biggest star left once and for all, reducing AEW’s once-competitive pissing contest against WWE to a cat fighting a Dragon.
AEW was in the midst of a record-breaking pay-per-view that was supposed to be its coming out party, but instead it came apart. Perry’s falling out with CM Punk silver-plated Phil Brooks to WWE. With The Bloodline and Cody Rhodes already pouring it on, this led to a seismic shift in the Wednesday Night War. It reminds me of the time The Lakers f—led around and stole Pau Gasol from the Grizzlies for beads and trinkets. Or the time when The Spurs ended up with that lottery pick when they already had David Robinson, and turned it into Tim Duncan. Yeah the NBA is rigged, you tryna fight me over this or what?
CM Punk said he actually liked Jack Perry, but had to choke him a bit at AEW All In after Punk described Perry as a petulant, young Hollywood Blonde cursing out every producer who wouldn’t let him use real glass. Prior to the Brawl In, Jack Perry started with a promising career in AEW. Almost too promising. Through an MJF Promo, that served as a Tony Khan coronation by proxy, MJF named himself, Darby Allin, Sammy Guevara and Jack Perry as the four Pillars of AEW. This was going to be the young foundation and the bedrock for AEW’s dynasty as a competitor to WWE.
By the way, there’s nothing wrong with this idea at all. I was on board with AEW’s choices—though would it have killed you to to have a Black pillar—and I liked the fact that AEW was centering its product around four young, homegrown talent. But with no leadership, each pillar became reckless. Darby Allin, on his way to make a dangerous trek of Mt. Everest, legit broke his ankle before an already ill-advised trip. Shortly before he broke his ankle, Darby took an insane bump through real glass word to Jack Perry, who has the reverse Midas touch. MJF went from wrestling 8 times a year and drawing money through his promos, to wrestling the AEW style several times per month.
This detracted from MJF’s essential specialness in the market place, all while breaking his body down to the point that now he’s hurt. Sammy Guevara was suspended yet again, apparently for injuring Jeff Hardy, but I don’t all the way believe that’s the only reason he was suspended. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire and we’ll just leave it at that.
