If you suffer from frequent headaches, jaw pain, clicking jaw, and even ear ringing, you could be one of the more than 10 million Americans who suffer from TMJ disorder. TMJ disorder is defined as a problem with the muscles and joints in the face that cause these symptoms. A TMJ dysfunction occurs when the joint that makes up the jaw is tight or restricted, either by the condylar disc (the connective tissue between the two bones that make up the joint) or the muscles that surround and move the joint, such as the masseter and temporalis. This can occur as a result of bad tongue position, breathing and swallowing habits and jaw position. A TMJ dysfunction can also cause the upper cervical joints (C1-C3) and the associated muscles to become restricted and refer pain to other areas—most commonly behind the eyes and to the jaw area. How do you fix TMJ dysfunction? Since the symptoms of cervical instability are similar to those of other conditions, pain can worsen by whiplash injuries, stress (clenching), or merely sleeping in the wrong position.
