The 2023 Subaru WRX is a sporty compact sedan with a turbocharged flat-four engine and all-wheel drive. The WRX has a storied history in rally car racing and a loyal fanbase of enthusiasts who are into tuning their vehicles. For 2022, the WRX received a much-needed redesign and features a new engine, transmission and bolder exterior styling. The current-generation Subaru WRX gets its power from a turbocharged 2.4-liter horizontally opposed (so-called boxer) engine that produces 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
Our editors have praised the WRX for its nimble handling, spirited acceleration and easy-to-use clutch pedal. At the time of writing, we haven't tested the optional continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), so we can't speak to how it performs.
We don't expect much to change the 2023 WRX since it's only a year removed from a full redesign. The only major item to keep an eye on is the debut of the even higher-performance WRX STI variant, which could possibly make an appearance in either late 2022 or early 2023.
The WRX costs several thousand more than its competitors, which include the Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Elantra N and the Kia Forte GT. But the WRX has an ace up its sleeve in the form of all-wheel drive, which few rivals can match. Only the Mazda 3 Turbo comes standard with all-wheel drive, offers similar power and is comparably priced. Although in the Mazda 3's case, you're paying for a nicer interior and overall refinement rather than a more performance-oriented car in the WRX.
The 2022 Honda Civic Si is arguably the sweet spot in the brand's small-car line, with a near-perfect ratio of performance and daily-driver traits. We even named it to our Editors' Choice list. Since the regular Honda Civic it's based on was just transformed for a new generation, the Si benefits from the same improvements to its interior space and roster of features. A specially tuned chassis and punchy turbo-four engine give the Civic Si the performance to compete with sport compacts such as the Subaru WRX and VW Golf GTI, both of which were also recently redesigned. Plus, the Civic's sub-$30,000 price tag helps it deliver on value. The 2022 Civic Si sedan will continue to only offer a manual transmission and front-wheel drive, and its fun-to-drive nature carries on, too.
What's New for 2022?
After a brief hiatus for the 2021 model year, the Civic Si returns for a new generation with new dimensions, better features, and–most importantly–improved performance.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Under the hood of the Civic Si is a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 200 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. That power is sent to the front wheels through a standard limited-slip differential and a six-speed manual transmission; an automatic option isn't currently offered. Our hands-on experience revealed some engine coarseness when pushed, but there was little turbo lag, and we loved the shifter's short throws and light action. The manual gearbox also now has a rev-match feature for drivers who haven't perfected the heel-and-toe technique, and it's easy to turn on or off. At our test track, the Civic Si managed a 6.8-second zero-to-60-mph time, 0.5 seconds quicker than a Civic hatchback we tested with the six-speed manual. Compared with the regular Civic, the Si has larger brake rotors and is available with a set of summer tires. The latter combined with the car's firmer suspension gives the Si.
