| Video Discription | June 13 2021 We checked our Tree Swallow boxes last week on June 8th and found that most had newly hatched, very tiny young with no apparent sign of blow fly larvae. At that early stage we don't like to disturb the adults or the young as the babies are very weak. So we knew that in 3-5 days we would need to check them again as this would be the period over which blow fly larvae would develop and when young birds would be most vulnerable. There were a couple boxes we didn't check closely this time as they had young that were almost ready to leave the nest. We found fly larvae in over half of our boxes so it is important to do these checks to ensure the greatest chance of survival of the young. |
