| Video Discription | On October 3, 2013, keynote speaker Victor Rios, Ph.D., presented "Crossing Institutional Settings: Qualitative Research, Empirical Insight, and Social Transformation," at the 19th Annual Midwest Qualitative Research Conference. Dr. Rios, an associate professor of Sociology at the University of California-Santa Barbara, drew upon his experience as a former gang member who escaped the urban streets to earn a Ph.D. at Berkeley. Dr. Rios presented his findings from a decade of major field studies conducted in Northern and Southern California on marginalized, "delinquent" Black and Latino young males. He also discussed his methodological approaches of "shadowing" and "crossing institutional settings" as well as introduced the audience to concepts he developed such as "the youth control complex" and "cultural misrecognition." |
