Also known as the Great Conjunction, it will be visible with the naked eye. Great Conjunction refers to the close approach of Jupiter and Saturn, as seen from the Earth. It happens when Jupiter, Saturn, and the Earth come in a straight line. With each passing day, the two largest planets are moving closer to each other. On December 21, they will be just 0.1 degrees apart, appearing as a double star. Look for Jupiter and Saturn shining brightly in the south-west after sunset. The brighter one is Jupiter. The two planets made their closest approach to the Earth in July this year. The Great Conjunction is a cosmic play of orbital motions and speeds. Saturn takes about 30 years to orbit the Sun. This means, every year, it completes 12 degrees of its orbit. Jupiter, on the other hand, takes 12 years, sweeping 30 degrees around the Sun each year. Thus every year, Jupiter closes the gap between Saturn and itself by 30-12 = 18 degrees. Hence every 20 years (18x20 = 360) on average, Jupiter laps the ringed beauty. So the Great Conjunction takes place every 20 years on average. Last time in 2001, Jupiter and Saturn were too close to the Sun. So they were not visible to the naked eye at the Great Conjunction.
