| Video Discription | For this Archive Dive we surfaced a scene I shot in Vietnam with Hearts Around the World in 2014. I’ve seen a lot through my lenses over the years and there are a handful of scenes that I’ve captured that have truly changed the way I think about life. I can’t fully express the sense of humility, and gratitude I felt when filming this particular scene. It was very surreal and visceral being in a live operating room, during a heart surgery, non-the-less. The people that work in the field of surgery have been abundantly exposed to seeing things like this and trained on how to digest the experience. Movies and TV try to paint a picture for the rest of us for what it might be like to witness something like this. But nothing in my life had accurately prepared me for the swell of feelings that would come over me. I had a million questions I wanted to ask, but of course, that wasn’t my place. I mostly wanted to know all about the patient. Who was their family? What has life been like for them? Will he/she be okay? I had nothing but concern and empathy for this patient, but also a new found concern for the health and safety of myself and the people in my own life. It became more apparent to me in the 5 minutes I was allowed in this room of just how fragile a single life can be. What an honor it is to have a heart that beats healthy. February is heart awareness month, but for me, every month is heart awareness month, as my wife is an Advanced Cardiac Sonographer. (Basically she takes more important pictures than I do. Life saving pictures of hearts.) The more I learn from her about how the heart works, the more baffled I am that we’re even alive. Our bodies are so complex and amazing! Completely blows my mind.
