| Video Discription | Landscape Architect Bernard Ede introduces this land reclamation and development project in London’s green belt on a former historic landscape, subsequently exploited for gravel and backfilled with domestic waste. Although previously capped with clay in an attempt at land restoration, this failed and underground fires and leachate pollution of the Grand Union Canal became major issues for the local authority. Landscape architects Ede Griffiths Partnership led by Bernard Ede formed part of an interdisciplinary team with Arup Associates as masterplanners and architects, Ove Arup and Partners as engineers for geotechnical and engineering reclamation with the Dutch specialists Grontmij. The team also included urban designers, golf course architects Robert Trent Jones, and landscape architects Charles Funke Associates as planting and plant procurement consultants. Restoration was through recycling the land, including the waste, with no export or import of material and creating new landforms. Using plans and photos, Bernard Ede explains how the proposals for the site were stitched into its surrounding landscape and land use, including public access. He demonstrates how the design influences and concepts integrate the architecture with landscape, and details the processes involved based on the principle that all the different elements were considered together rather than independently. None of this would have happened without an enlightened client, Stuart Lipton of Stanhope Securities, willing to invest in open space and landscape in association with architecture. Claire Watson, lifestyle manager for Stockley Park, discusses how the landscape is evolving to meet the changing needs of tenants and climate and biodiversity. With changes in ownership the original management and maintenance reports have been lost.
