How to avoid the confusion between staccato and dotted notes and between legato and ties. A staccato marking is a dot above or below a note. This means that the note should be shortened (legato literally means "detached"). This video gives audio examples of staccato notes being played on the piano. The video also explains how students can avoid making the mistake of confusing a staccato marking with a dotted note - the dot on a dotted note comes after a note, whilst a staccato note is always above or below the note. Legato means "bound" or "together" and instructs a performer to play notes smoothly with no gaps in between the notes. It is the opposite of staccato. Again, audio examples on the piano are played in this video and explained. Legato is written through curved lines above or below a series of notes called "slurs". Students are also advised to avoid confusing these slurs with note ties - note ties are also curved lines above or below the notes, but they join together 2 notes on the same pitch and combine their note lengths instead. |
