| Video Discription | So you want to own a Saint Bernard!? Meet Bear a 185 lb Massive Saint Bernard! First lets go over this Gaint Rescue Dogs History: The Saint Bernard originated in Switzerland and the Western Alps of Italy. They were bred to be powerful and muscular to rescue travelers, in more than 40ft of snow for miles, who were coming through the Great St. Bernard Pass that went from Italy through Switzerland to Rome. The dogs became famous for working at a Hospice in Switzerland built by an Italian Monk named “Bernard of Menthon” who used these large and gentle dogs to rescue people along the Alps in the late 1600s. Bernard was later named a Saint and so the dogs were named after him being called the “Saint Bernards”. WEIGHT: The average saint Bernard Weight is 140 to 180lbs for males and 120-140lbs for females. The most famous St. Bernard is named Barry who saved between 40 to 100 people on record, pulling injured and wounded travels out of the snow and leading them to shelter on sleds. His body is preserved in the Natural History Museum in Bern Switzerland. PERSONLAITY and Training: The saint Bernard is a gentle giant, however you must still choose caution when meeting one for the first time as any dog meeting someone new can become timid or aggressive. But the recorded personality of a Saint Bernard is Calm, patient, gentle and good with kids and family. They do crave attention and should live in the house with their owners and not left to live outside. TRAINING: Fortunately, Saint Bernard’s are sensitive smart and want to please, but start training as soon as you bring your saint puppy home while they are still a manageable size because they do have a stubborn side as well. GROOMING AND HYGIENE: The Saint Bernard comes in several coat colors with Saint bernards come in two coat types: Shorthair and Longhaired. The Shorthaired saint has a dense, smooth coat. His longhaired brother has a medium-length coat that tis slightly waivey. Either coat type can be white with red or red with white. Both coat types shed heavily in the spring and fall and need weekly brushing year-round to keep loose hair under control. The long haired saints need brushing a few times a week. Saint Bernards are not clean dogs and not for neat freak owners. They are heavy droolers, shed and track lots of dirt or even drool covered mud through the house, and theres simply nothing you can do about it. AND don’t belive any breeders who say they produce “Dry mouth” saints to make a puppy sale! These don’t exist! LIFE SPAN AND HEALTH: They are ****e to skin infections under the Neck where the drool runs through their mane, or where their collar lays and regular baths or grooming appointments are necessary to keep them clean. With their dense coats and large muscular bodies they easlity get heat stroke and need to be kept indoors when living in hot climate areas. Like all giant breeds they have a short lifespan of 8 to 10 years. They are ****e to hip and elbow dysplasia and bone cancer. Overall, keeping them lean and fit will prolong their lifespan.
