| Video Discription | It's the reported speech of a dying officer but meant as a generalisation of the plight of all broken and moribund young soldiers and a declaration of their philosophy of life and death. "A Terre" means "To the Earth", but it's a pun on pied-a-terre, a temporary residence. He explores all the old bravadoes and consolations and finds them all wanting and worthless. He would exchange any of them for a little more life, of even the lowest quality, animal, microbe or plant, he is bargaining to become something useful however small rather than nothing at all. All that remains of his soul is the grief, the pity, the empathy that it instils in the listener, which sustains it in the last few moments of life as it passes into whatever state it becomes when it has no further need of flesh and blood. I found this analysis on the web in a few places: "A photographic representation of a dying soldier due to the wounds he sustained. The effect of war on the individual is vividly portrayed by Owen. By using the poetry as the camera..." and so on. The critic cannot read nor can he write grammatical English. I don't know where he got the camera idea. (Okay, that really annoyed me.) |
