He is Australian and had studied Chinese before but was not fluent, but after the incident his internal monologue completely switched to Mandarin and he even briefly even lost his ability to speak English! So for a time in the hospital he was only able to communicate with a Chinese nurse and his own parents could not understand him. Originally I was skeptical of his story, but I did more research and found out that there is a documented phenomenon called foreign accent syndrome where one’s accent is affected by head trauma, and there are also numerous documented cases where your linguistic abilities themselves are affected, basically granting you superpowers in new languages. In addition to discussing this phenomenon, Ben also relates his extensive experience appearing on Chinese television as a foreigner, and we discuss his language learning philosophy as well.
