Markonahalli Dam was built by Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV under the guidance of his Diwan, Sir M.Visweswaraiah. Markonahalli Dam 6070 hectares of land, masonry structures of 139 meters and a pair of earth dams extending to 1470 metre on either side. Markonahalli Dam Reservoir has catchment area of 4103 square kilometres. It can hold 68 million square meters of water at full. Markonahalli Dam Reservoir is 731.57 metres above mean sea level. Markonahalli Dam Reservoir got 27 species of fish, of which 13 species are commercial fish.Puntius fish species is of large numbers. Markonahalli Dam was built across shimsha river, a tributary of Kaveri river.Markonahalli dam automatic Syphon System by Sir M. Visweswaraiah is amazing technology. The special feature of Markonahalli Dam is that the dam gates are always open but still water does not flow until the dam is full. This happens as the dam has 4 small, 2 big and 10 wood Syphon which when dam is full will allow water to pass through automatically!
