ForestDepartment records confirm that elephants from Karnataka firstreached Maharashtra in 2002. Human–elephant conflictincidences have also been reported from Goa, another state notincluded in the list of elephant ranging states. Elephants in boththese states have been causing immense damage particularly tocrops like paddy, coconut and cashew. Equally important is theamount of fear and anxiety it has created in the minds of the localpeople and also among the Forest department staff who patrolthe affected areas, though the realit is that they are hardly trainedto mitigate such conflict problems. The routes followed by elephants in Maharashtra and adjoiningareas were recorded. In Chandgad, elephants generally restricttheir movement close to water sources (reservoirs) whereverpossible. Frequent sightings of elephants at Damne, Hajagoli,Maduvale, Jangomhati, Ambevadi, Patne, Jalugude andKaranjgaon support this statement. In Dodamarg, elephantsgenerally take shelter in the forested areas on the fringes of theTilari reservoir in Konal Forest Round, which is now almostdevoid of human habitation. Records show that elephants herehave raided more villages. Elephants have also made their wayinto northern Goa from Dodamarg taluk along the areas adjoiningManeri River (Sindhudurg district) of Maharashtra.
