Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Angels' superstar, and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, showed their enthusiasm for meeting Sparks rookie Cameron Brink during a memorable evening at Dodger Stadium. This event took place as Brink and her teammate Rickea Jackson threw out the ceremonial first pitches before the Dodgers' game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Brink and Jackson, both newly drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks, were invited to Dodger Stadium for the special occasion. Brink got a chance to chat with Ohtani before stepping onto the mound, receiving some encouraging advice from the baseball star. "He just said, 'Just do it, you’ll be fine,'" Brink shared during a pregame interview broadcast live on the DodgerVision screen at the stadium.
One of the highlights for Brink was meeting Ohtani, who, like her, is a New Balance athlete. The two athletes, both listed at 6 foot 4, shared a light-hearted moment when Ohtani commented on Brink's height. "You're tall," he remarked. Brink playfully responded, "Who's taller, me or you?" prompting Ohtani to laugh and say, "You!"
Adding to the excitement, Ohtani revealed that his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, also wanted to meet Brink. Tanaka, standing at 5 foot 11, played professionally in the Women's Japan Basketball League from 2019 to 2023 and represented Japan at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championships. Brink expressed her admiration for the couple during a pregame interview with Spectrum SportsNet LA's Kirsten Watson. "I just think he’s great," Brink said. "I know his wife played basketball, too, so I love them. I just love everything he stands for.”
In preparation for their ceremonial pitches, it was noted that Brink had been seen warming up her arm while Jackson had not. "Yeah, I don't need to warm up," Jackson joked. "I'm just kidding." She did get in a few practice throws, though they seemed not to have much impact on her actual pitch.
As the two rookies stood side-by-side on the mound, they launched their pitches simultaneously. Brink's pitch was nearly flawless, landing straight into the glove of Dodgers outfielder Miguel Vargas, who was squatting behind the plate. In contrast, Jackson's pitch veered off course, causing Vargas to dodge quickly to his left to avoid being hit. Dodgers pitcher Bobby Miller, who was the intended catcher for Jackson’s pitch, had to slide over and make an impressive catch to save the day.
The Sparks teammates reacted with good humor to the contrast in their pitches, adding to the overall festive atmosphere of the evening. They also had the honor of meeting Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and other players, and delivered the late Vin Scully's famous line, "It's time for Dodger baseball!" before the game started.
The event was part of a whirlwind experience for Brink and Jackson, who are navigating their rookie seasons with the Sparks. Brink, who was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in last month's draft, and Jackson, picked two spots later, have quickly become fan favorites. Brink is averaging seven points, five rebounds, and a team-high 3.5 blocks in 22.5 minutes as a starter, while Jackson is averaging 10 points in 20 minutes off the bench.
Reflecting on their experiences so far, Brink told Watson, "We’re two games in and all the attention has been overwhelming, and the love. So hopefully we just keep that momentum because it’s been so great.” Jackson added, “Yeah, it’s just been amazing. I feel like it’s about time, you know, that [women's basketball is] getting the recognition. But I feel like it’s just gonna keep growing. We’re happy for the vets. They’re the ones that deserve this all.”
The Sparks are set to return to the court on Tuesday night, hosting the Washington Mystics at Crypto.com Arena. The excitement and support for the team and its players continue to grow, highlighting the increasing recognition and appreciation for women's basketball. |
