Police said the suspect, who identified himself as Kyota Hattori, also set fire to the carriage as it came to a stop at Kokuryo Station in Chofu. After the October 31, 2021, incident, the suspect also reportedly told police he hoped to kill at least two people so he would receive the death penalty, and that he was inspired by a similar attack in August 2021.
