| Video Discription | The refractive index is a measure of how much light bends or refracts when it enters a material. Mathematically, it's defined as the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in the material. Different materials have different refractive indices, which can influence phenomena like reflection, refraction, and dispersion of light. Total internal reflection is a when a light ray travelling through a medium strikes the boundary with another medium at an angle greater than the critical angle. Instead of refracting into the second medium, the light is entirely reflected back into the original medium. This only occurs when light travels from a medium with a higher refractive index to one with a lower refractive index. The refractive index of air is approximately 1.0. For water, it’s around 1.3. At a water-air boundary, light can undergo total internal reflection if it travels from water to air. |
