The main types/categories explained & recommended bottles below:
• Light Rum
Bootsy favorite: Havana Club Anejo Blanco https://drizly.sjv.io/LNroV
Clear & lighter-bodied. A lot of light rums are aged in barrels for a year or more but are later filtered to remove color and impurities. Tasting notes: Light oak & tropical fruits but will be smoother and less ****ounced than other rums in part due to the charcoal filtering.
• Gold Rum
Bootsy Favorite: Tanduay Gold Rum https://drizly.sjv.io/eWBBQ
Gold rums are aged a little longer than light rums. Slightly more complex than white rums, but not always. Gold rum doesn’t always dictate aging in barrels as many distilleries use caramel to color the rum. Tasting notes can vary from vanilla, oak, toffee & light spices
• Dark Rum
Bootsy Favorite: Papa's Pilar Sherry Finish Dark Rum https://drizly.sjv.io/GNqq2
Full-bodied & well-aged in barrels. Distillers often use molasses to color the final product so be careful. Tasting notes: dark chocolate, coffee & dried fruits
• Aged Rum or Old Rum
Bootsy favorites: Ron del Barrilito 3 Star https://drizly.sjv.io/NqPoq & Plantation XO 20th Anniversary https://drizly.sjv.io/XeZZ3
Some distilleries age their rums by choice, while others must do so by local law. Any aged rum should be accompanied by an age statement printed somewhere on the label. Aged rums can be sipped on neat, as it can be as complex and tasty with similar tasting notes of oak, leather, tobacco, caramel, & vanilla that you would find in your favorite aged Whiskey.
• Spiced Rum
Bootsy favorite: Chairman's Reserve Spiced Rum https://drizly.sjv.io/ZA44z
Spiced rum usually contains added sweeteners & spices like vanilla, cinnamon, cloves & aniseed.
• Navy Rum or Overproof
Bootsy favorite: J Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum https://drizly.sjv.io/4NKR0 & Smith & Cross Navy Rum https://drizly.sjv.io/BMAAJ
Whereas most rums are proofed at around 80 proof (or 40% alcohol) most Navy rum is bottled at 50% abv or higher, whereas overproof rum is bottled at 60% abv or higher. Tasting notes: bananas, pineapples, pears & walnuts, as long as you can get through the burn to taste them. These are best used to mix in cocktails to soften the burn and not suggested to be sipped alone.
• Rhum Agricole
Bootsy favorite: Clément Select Barrel Rhum Agricole https://drizly.sjv.io/0NOON
Spelled with an “h” not to confuse you but to connotate a different style specific to the French Caribbean Islands. The difference with Rhum Agricole is that it’s made only from fresh-pressed raw sugar cane juice instead of molasses so “terroir” (or the environment where the sugar cane is grown) plays an important factor. Rhum is made in a number of countries but is most famous for being in produced in Martinique. Rhum Agricole can come in white, gold, dark, or aged and carries a very different flavor than other rums, bordering on a slightly grassy, vegetal, and sometimes funkier flavor profile than other rums.
"The rise in premium rum sales is in part to the rise in high-end craft Tiki Bars. When people enjoy a spirit in a cocktail, it opens up a conversation between bartender and customer..." Read more below.
