Marjorie Taylor Greene's motion to vacate the speakership didn't just fail - it went down in flames in less than a minute. On Wednesday, Greene introduced her motion as "privileged," which means that a vote had to take place within two legislative days. While she was introducing the motion, she was loudly booed by her own Republican colleagues. But rather than waiting two days, the motion was immediately put to a vote and tabled in a record 48 seconds. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains what happened.

Marjorie Taylor Green suffered the ultimate humiliation this week on Wednesday when she finally introduced her official motion to vacate the speakership of Republican speaker Mike Johnson as privileged. Which means at that point on Wednesday afternoon when it happened, the house had 48 hours, two legislative days to take action on it. That is what privileged means. Now, she had originally introduced this motion to vacate back in March, uh, literally the moment they went on their two week, uh, spring break, and it's been kind of kicking around for a while. But she insisted last week she was gonna bring it up this week, which she finally did. And based on what happened, it could not have gone worse. For Marjorie Taylor Greene, when she introduced the motion as privileged on Wednesday, she was loudly booed, not by the Democrats, but by her own party in the house chamber.
So to put that in perspective, a Republican member of Congress goes to the house floor, introduces this motion and is booed by her own colleagues, by her, you know, friends, even though she doesn't really have any anymore. And that's how it started. At that point, they had two days to figure out what to do, but it didn't take 'em two days. It literally took them less than one minute because they immediately held a vote and the vote failed. In a 48 second vote, Marjorie Taylor Greene's hopes of ousting Speaker Johnson were destroyed. The final vote was 3 59 to 43 11 Republicans and 32 Democrats, uh, joined the motion to vacate. So that's it. 48 seconds. Yay, nay. Do we vacate, do we not over Marjorie Taylor Greene. Done. That is the most humiliating thing I have ever heard happen to anyone on the house floor in my lifetime.
And she knew this was gonna happen. That's the funniest part. It was very clear from the outset of this, that Democrats were not gonna come and save her or, or save speaker, or excuse me, yeah, they weren't gonna vote with her to Al Speaker Johnson. They made that clear. She knew she didn't have enough Republicans to do this, but she insisted on doing it anyway. She could have just ignored it and said, you know what? We're gonna let this, uh, we're just gonna forget. I even did it. And she could have moved on. She could have gone out in the media and said, well, listen, you know, I did the, you know, quick census. I didn't have the votes, so why waste everybody's time if I don't have the votes? That's just kind of silly. But she didn't want to do that. She's too stubborn, she's too hardheaded, and she made a complete
And total of herself, which is exactly what she is. Marjorie Taylor Greene got exactly what she deserved this week. She got booed. She got humiliated. And not that I like Speaker Johnson at all, but he survived Her career, on the other hand, is definitely not on a good trajectory. |
