"We'll meet the supply ship at an appointed station and go alongside and connect. We'll fire tie-lines across and connect to them so we're connected and that way we can transfer pallets and stores or ammunition from one ship to the other. At the same time we use helicopters on the flight deck for vertical replenishment, so we can move stores between about three stations down here and two or three helicopters up on top so we get five or six stations done at one time."

STORYLINE:
American warships central to the bombing campaign in Afghanistan are in constant need of supplies.
On Wednesday the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson underwent what the navy calls an UNREP, an underway replenishment.
It's navy jargon for more bombs, food and other supplies.
Sea Knight helicopters airlifted pallets of supplies from the supply ship USS Sacramento to the Carl Vinson.
This floating town of 5,500 people has to be fed, clothed and re-armed as the missions into Afghanistan continue unabated.
The USS Sacramento pulled alongside the Carl Vinson early Wednesday morning and began unloading bombs and other ammunition as well as fuel for the planes and other general supplies.
The carrier itself is nuclear powered and only needs to be refueled every 20 years.
"We'll meet the supply ship at an appointed station and go alongside and connect. We'll fire tie-lines across and connect to them so we're connected and that way we can transfer pallets and stores or ammunition from one ship to the other," said the Ordnance Handling Officer Lieutenant Commander Bob Neville.
On Wednesday the Carl Vinson took aboard about 150 tons of material.
While the Carl Vinson was being loaded via lines strung between the ships and by helicopters, another navy ship, the guided missile cruiser USS Princeton was also being re-supplied.
The Princeton uses the same fuel used by the warplanes on the Carl Vinson.
It's a massive operation keeping these ships afloat and armed and the crew of USS Sacramento works round the clock making sure that the American forces are always primed for action.
