It is the gateway into the United States from Latin America, and is home to the world's most trafficked border crossing. The San Ysidro border crossing in Tijuana, Mexico connects Tijuana with San Diego, California. This border crossing has always been an important social, political, and economic passageway for both US Citizens and our neighbors to the south. In more recent years, the Tijuana border crossing has been a centerpiece of news coverage all over the globe because of the sheer number of people attempting to get into the United States. Social, economic and political unrest in Latin countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua, and other areas around Mexico, have led to a large influx of people trying to seek a better future in the United States. My biggest goal for coming down to Tijuana, Mexico this week was to experience this unbelievable migrant wave first-hand, and try to explain their story a little bit better than the news does. Luckily, through Border Tours, we were able to connect with the Migrant Affairs office in downtown Tijuana, and arrange a visit to (just) two of the migrant camps setup here in the Mexican border city. What I experienced in these migrant camps, still sits with me today...
