Rabbit Escape From Eagle
The people filming this video were hunting hares on farmland in Lincolnshire with a professional eagle falconer and his friends. The first days provided them with some stunning footage of a hare that turned and faced an incoming eagle, escaping the razor-sharp talons with perfect timing. There were plenty of other impressive flights and eventually the golden eagles found their quarry. Eagles have the air advantage which allows these amazing birds of prey to scope a large area down below to spot potential prey, but even with this advantage, it’s not a guaranteed hunt, because the animals they hunt, in this case, a hare, is fast, and can find secret hiding places in a jiffy.
Here among the mountains and mores of Northern Scotland, is a bird that embodies the best elements of the greatest raptors. The golden eagle has a beak that can rip flesh like a blade. Its powerful feet and dagger-like talons have the strength to crush the skull of its victims, yet the golden eagle wages an uncertain war for survival against prey that can vanish into the landscape faster than you can blink. In winter, these highlands are often snow-covered, but the snow can come and go just in a matter of days for the mountain hair. This can be treacherous for the hares for these white bunny rabbits which use the snow as camouflage.
They usually freeze when the hungry raptors pass overhead, so without the cover of snow, they stand out cruelly against the brown hills. The eagle singles one out, but if the hare can turn uphill, it could take away the raptor’s advantage of striking from above. The hair that took the high road survives, but the second one that didn’t perishes at the mighty “talons” of the eagle. The video is acrobatic, to say the least. An eagle comes zooming down on a large jackrabbit, but the jackrabbit performs one of the most acrobatic jumps, flips, and turns included, I have ever seen, which allows the bunny to avoid being turned into a pretzel. The rabbit escapes and the eagle will have to regroup and plan another attack.
Wildebeest Escapes From Crocodile
The wildebeest in this video is stuck and the future is grim because he’s being held back by a hungry crocodile that’s holding on to the animal’s tail, preventing it from escaping. All is not lost, because the wildebeest can still use his powerful legs to escape, but he must act quickly, which he does, and besides losing part of his tail, he exits the water, surprisingly unharmed. A wildebeest crossing the crocodile-infested mara river that was caught by a large crocodile, worked hard to get out of the water, even though it seemed like it was going to be the end for the wild animal, but he had a lot of fight left in him, and because the crocodile was only able to hang on to the animal's tail, it allowed him to walk out of there without any injuries. A thirsty wildebeest approaches a waterhole and is startled by a ravenous crocodile that explodes out of the water, but the wildebeest still manages to avoid the crocodile after a few nifty moves, and runs off, saving its life in the process.
There are many close calls like this one, every day, in the bush. It almost looks like this wildebeest in this video is spending a day at the spa, but he’s trying extremely hard to escape a crocodile that has latched onto one of the animal’s legs. This is quite different than the previous wildebeest we have seen, because his leg could be badly damaged after this incident if he escapes, and if it’s the case, he will eventually be attacked by another predator and easily be killed. The wildebeest works hard and pulls, even though the crocodile holds on, which must be painful, but when the reptile lets go for one second, the wildebeest walks out of there and his leg looks fine. This wildebeest’s power is undeniable. I mean, to be able to pull a crocodile out of the water with one leg stuck inside the reptile's mouth is quite an accomplishment, but getting that leg is another story. We don’t see the outcome of this struggle, but I’m putting my money on the crocodile. |
