It was built in the mid-19th century under the direction of Proby Cautley, a British engineer who was tasked with finding a way to bring water to the dry and arid lands of the region. Cautley's design for the canal involved building a series of dams and reservoirs along the Ganges to capture and store water during the rainy season, which could then be released into the canal during the dry season. The construction of the Ganga Canal was a major undertaking, requiring the labour of thousands of workers and the use of cutting-edge technology and techniques. Despite the many challenges and obstacles that Cautley and his team faced during the construction process, the Ganga Canal was eventually completed and has played a vital role in the development and prosperity of the region.
