      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Kate Winslet reigns supreme with another commanding performance even as The Regime's hold over its scabrously satirical tone proves wobbly.

Sarah Ditum Times (UK) You can imagine The Regime was terribly fun to make. Put Winslet in a Perspex sedan! Hilarious! Fill the palace with potatoes! So droll! But if it hadn’t been for the plinky-plink Russian score, I’d have forgotten it was supposed to be a comedy. Apr 22, 2024 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) The Regime is enormously funny, but it’s an unusual sort of funny, apt to make you goggle or gasp rather than laugh. To call it “dry” would be an understatement; it’s desiccated. Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Katie Rosseinsky Independent (UK) The show can’t seem to work out exactly what it is trying to satirise, instead painting in broad strokes. Despite Winslet’s off-kilter charisma, it’s just not enough to have you pledging allegiance. Rated: 3/5 Apr 10, 2024 Full Review Paloma Rando El Pais (Spain) The Regime is generic and vague in its criticism, and it fails to find a coherent tone. May 1, 2024 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene As a black comedy about fascistic populism The Regime could hardly be more timely. Yet it nevertheless wore out its welcome well before reaching its eighth and final episode. Apr 26, 2024 Full Review Barbara Ellen Observer (UK) It's been a while since something so rammed with illustrious names and production pedigree capsized with such gusto. S E Dull. I had no interest in finding out what was going to happen next. For me, that’s the kiss of death. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/09/24 Full Review Vicki S I don’t understand all the negative reviews this show is getting. I think it’s interesting, timely and terrifically acted. It’s depressing as all hell, of course, as life under a selfish, egotistical, insane dictator is. Fascinating how one ill willed and destructive person can be given so much power; how all of government can be organized around indulging one person’s neuroses and self indulgent desires while that person does nothing to benefit the people they govern. And how the United States, proud of being a democracy itself, installs dictators in other countries who will serve its interests. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Vanessa S Kate Winslet deserves awards for her performance. The characters were wild and it was a good show. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Surfinbbbird 1 I gave it half a star because Kate Winslet did a good job of portraying her character…unfortunately, of which is extremely repulsive, just as is everyone in this series except for the boy that she confiscates from Agnes. I tried to give this a chance since it is difficult to find anything to watch these days that has a clear plot and somewhat of a moral compass…but it is painful to watch and each episode is more of a train wreck than the previous. Every movie or story needs a hero, or at least someone…anyone who is likeable. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/02/24 Full Review Robin H Starts off brilliantly. Great hopes for a real parody of the totalitarian mentality, with a mesmerising Winslet at its core. But as the episodes progress it becomes evident that the writer and producers don't know where to take it except to make Winslet's character completely lose her marbles and go off the rails into fairyland, taking the show with her. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review David F How did Kate Winslet ever get involved in this pos? Ridiculously broad “comedy” with ritually no point. The episodes become more and more painful to watch Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Read all reviews
