During Selena Gomez's Revival tour, she introduced the song "Feel Me" on stage but never released it on an album. Now, she's ready to give the fans the single they want. "Feel Me" came out at midnight as a Rare vinyl edition track.
Lyrically, it reflects where Gomez was in 2016. That was during the height of her on-off period with Justin Bieber—and the song touches on that. It captures how she wanted Bieber to feel during one of their off periods as he dated other people ("Every time your lips touch another / I want you to feel me") and how over his bullshit she was becoming ("Won't be caught up in the middle / Of your highs and your lows / Baby, 'long as you're not with me / You'll always be alone").
Around that time, Bieber released Purpose, which had several tracks about Gomez. He posted "throwback" photos of her on his Instagram to bait fans. In November 2015, they had a viral reunion at the Montage Beverly Hills where he publicly serenaded her:
Bieber stepped out with now-wife Hailey Baldwin for the first time around late 2015 or early 2016. Gomez was exhausted—and even said so publicly—of Bieber's hot and cold act. She told W magazine in February 2016, "I'm so exhausted. I honestly am so done. I care about his health and well-being. But I can't do it anymore."
When Baldwin and Bieber broke up in the spring, Bieber invited Gomez to a Purpose concert in March and posted another Gomez throwback. ("Feels," he captioned a shot of them kissing. "Perfect," Gomez commented back).
In May 2016, Gomez and Bieber were not officially dating. She sang "Feel Me" for the first time on stage and told fans, "So one night, I was really irritated and I wrote this whole song."
Bieber and Gomez continued to have drama that year—he dated Sofia Richie, Jelena had their Instagram fight that made headlines, and then Gomez took a months-long break from her career for her health shortly after the fight. In 2017, Gomez dated The Weeknd from January to October. At the end of October and early November, Gomez and Bieber got back together for the last time. They lasted until March, then were on a break turned breakup. He got back together with Baldwin in June, got engaged to her in July, and they were married in September.
Gomez healed from all of that and released "Lose You to Love Me" and "Look at Her Now," at the end of last year. They are her last songs about Bieber and that heartbreak.
"Feel Me" is a portrait of who she was. As she told fans on Twitter in January, she's not that person anymore. And that's initially the reason she didn't release "Feel Me" on the album: "That song was from when I was in a different place and doesn’t fit with where I am right now," she wrote.
But the heart wants what it wants, so last night, Gomez dropped the single. On her Instagram, she explained, "On the Revival Tour, I introduced a song that you guys haven’t stopped talking about since. Soo you asked and I listened 😘 Today, Feel Me is out online and vinyl everywhere."
