Grand Theft Auto 4 has achieved 25 million lifetime sales, it has been revealed.

The game sold 11 million copies during its first month on sale, while the series itself has sold more than 125 million copies since debuting on the PSOne in 1997.

Announced by Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick during the firm's first quarter financial call, Grand Theft Auto 4 helped the firm achieve better-than-expected results for the three-month period ending June 30.

The company reported net revenues of $142.7 million, which were down on last year's $226.1 million. Operating losses, however, dropped from $111 million to $62 million, according to CVG.

Commenting on the results, Zelnick said: "Our better-than-expected first quarter results demonstrate that the market remains strong for the highest-quality interactive entertainment.

"We continue to benefit from robust demand for our recent genre-leading releases, iconic catalog titles and growing portfolio of innovative digitally delivered offerings.

"With Grand Theft Auto 5 launching on September 17, followed by the releases of NBA 2K14 and WWE 2K14, fiscal 2014 is poised to be one of our best years ever."

Zelnick also commented on the company's plans for the next-gen, revealing that it has an "extensive development pipeline".

"We have an extensive development pipeline, highlighted by proven franchises and groundbreaking new intellectual property."

Take-Two is reportedly hoping to break UK sales records with a huge Grand Theft Auto 5 launch allocation.

The game takes place in the fictional city of Los Santos, which is described as a "sprawling, satirical reimagining of Southern California".

Announced for PS3 and Xbox 360, more than 200,000 fans have petitioned for a PC release.
