Selena Gomez steps out for a date night with her beau The Weeknd... but the pair don't look too happy

She was first linked to R&B crooner The Weeknd - real name Abel Tesfaye - in January this year, and the pair were spotted on a romantic getaway to Florence later that month.

And pop princess Selena Gomez, 24, stepped out for a date night with her beau as they left Rao's restaurant in Spanish Harlem, New York on Tuesday.

Holding hands, the couple left the exclusive eatery - which only seats 10 well-connected diners at a time - but they didn't look too happy.

The couple put on a tactile display, but looked decidedly downcast as they failed to raise a smile.

With his eyes firmly planted on the horizon, 27-year-old Abel strode on determinedly, with Selena trailing behind him clutching his hand. 

However, a source recently told E! News that Selena is 'head over heels in love with Abel'.

'This love is very mature and she is in a different head space now,' E!'s source says of the romance, adding, 'She has really found who she is and what makes her happy. She loves Abel and he loves her.' 

Selena looked beautiful in a satin negligee style gown, which teased at her bust, and let her brunette tresses cascade down her shoulders. 

Abel looked trendy in an edgy patterned zipped sweatshirt over a black T-shirt, and layered a chain necklace over the top.

As the pair left, a young fan was lucky enough to get a photo with Selena, who threw her arms around the youngster and smiled.

The start of their relationship was clouded by the fact that Abel previously dated Bella Hadid - whose sister, Gigi, was reported to be close to Selena.

Bella split from the R&B star in November after dating him for two years; with Abel's loved-up outing with Selena seen just two months later.

Abel and Bella were reunited briefly at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Paris at the end of November in an awkward encounter where Bella walked the runway and he performed live.

Meanwhile, Selena was famously involved in a years-long relationship with Justin Bieber before they parted ways for good three years ago.

However, Selena recently praised Justin for his emotive performance at Ariana Grande's One Love Manchester concert, held to raise money for victims of the Manchester terror attack.

Selena said that Justin's performance was 'really beautiful' on Sirius XM Morning Mash Up on Monday, signifying that the pair have reconciled their differences and kept amicable.
