It is with a very heavy heart, that I would like to announce that Satish K. Mishra, the Skymet-HR head between 2011 and 2019 has left us, after a long and painful battle with cancer. Sat, as I used to call him, was an extremely affable and resourceful teammate. He had the capacity to find people, train them and motivate them. He also had the gift of keeping a team going through bad phases. Sat, in the 8 years with you, Skymet grew leaps and bounds under your guidance. You helped us grow from a small company of 20 to 300 employees. With your strategy and thoughtful tactics, we were able to ramp up to handle India’s biggest privately owned automatic weather station (AWS) network. And we were able to leverage the same team to build a remote-sensing business. You organised the best off-sites and workshops and I miss the corporate cricket matches that we used to play. Sat you will be missed. Most of all I will miss your radiant smile, which in the tightest of situations would whisper in my ear (All is well). EL NINO ADVISORY AND LA NINA WATCH CONCOMITANT, ENSO NEUTRAL LIKELY SOON El Nino ‘advisory’ pertains to conditions when El Nino is observed and expected to continue. La Nina ‘watch’ indicates conditions favourable for the development of La Nina with a notice period of six months. The El Nino/La Nina phenomenon is the biggest cause of year to year difference in weather in many regions. In La Nina years, the east-to-west Pacific trade winds are stronger, pushing warm surface waters to the west and drawing up deeper, cooler waters in the east. The crucial role of ageing satellites in Earth observation: NASA's Terra, Aqua, and Aura satellites have been providing crucial data on weather patterns, wildfires, oil spills, and ozone layer monitoring for over two decades. However, these satellites are nearing the end of their operational life, and there are concerns about the potential loss of irreplaceable data. Researchers are especially concerned about instruments like the microwave limb sounder on Aura, which offers vital insights into the stratosphere and ozone layer. If the data from these satellites is lost, it will pose substantial challenges to our understanding of climate change, wildfires, atmospheric chemistry, and other critical phenomena. PACIFIC WARMING LINGERS, IOD EARLIER THAN EXPECTED El Nino and La Nina events typically tend to develop during the period Apr-Jun and reach their maximum strength during Oct-Feb. The El Nino/La Nina cycle normally lasts for 9-12 months. However, these norms have been defied more than once and the events have lasted for 2 years or even longer. Since 1950, when reliable records began, La Nina's endurance has far exceeded the El Nino. La Nina has lasted for three consecutive monsoon seasons but El Nino has mostly collapsed during the second successive monsoon. EL NINO TO MAKE WAY FOR ENSO-NEUTRAL IN MAY ENSO is likely to turn neutral in May. Whenever there is a changeover, the transition period from El Nino to La Nina or otherwise is approximated as 6-8 weeks, and at times could be longer. Accordingly, a full-fledged La Nina is unlikely before the 3rd-4th week of July. La Nina, once in place, is expected to peak towards the fall of the year and start decaying during the early winters of next year.
