If you're looking for the best vegan condoms, you probably have a few questions. The first: Wait, regular condoms *aren’t* vegan?
Not always, sorry. A lot of condoms have casein (an animal product that comes from milk) to create a softer texture. That's not really a problem—unless, of course, you're a vegan. If you give up products like leather, in addition to following a vegan diet for ethical reasons, it might make sense for you to consider using vegan condoms, too.
You might also be wondering if there are any health benefits to using vegan condoms. While there's no reason to hate on casein from a health POV, it's true that vegan condoms tend to be more natural overall, and they often leave out ingredients like parabens, says sex therapist Janet Brito, PhD. Some are also organic. (Veryyy important note: Any condom is always better than no condom! Have you heard of STDs?)
The good news is, lots of brands are making vegan condoms, so it's easier than ever to find a natural, organic, form of protection. But like with any condom, the trick is to keep trying brands until you find your favorite. Have fun with that!
